5 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR CREATIVITY – WHILE WORKING FROM HOME

5 Ways to Boost Your Creativity
While Working From Home

Have you ever driven to a place you go all the time, pulled into the parking lot and can’t even remember how you got there? We typically say that we “went on autopilot.” Our minds and bodies are so used to the trip that we kinda just zone out and then – BOOM – we’re at our destination.

Working from home can also be like that sometimes. You wake up, do the dishes, laundry, gym, time block your day, have zoom call after zoom call, and before you know it, your mental capacity is full and you’re just drained of all ability to create! Most days, you have countless great ideas and the creativity just flows. The rest of the time, you just go through the motions. When it’s time to get creative, you sit and stare at a blank computer screen. Your brain just needs some training, just like an athlete needs physical training. Shock it a bit. Wake it up.
Next time you need a creative jolt of energy, try one of these 5 tricks:

1. SIT SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT

2. LEAVE THE HOUSE

3. LEAN INTO BOREDOM

4. CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE

5. GET OFF YOUR PHONE

1) SIT SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT

When you’re on your computer, you just sit in one or two places within your house. Likely in your office or on the couch?
Instead of sitting in your favorite spots, we recommend that you try out:

– Your porch or deck

– The floor

– The stairs

– A rarely-used chair

2) LEAVE THE HOUSE

It may be that anywhere in your house is too blah for a creativity injection. If that’s the case, then run away for an hour or two. If you’re thinking that you can’t because you have kids then do it when they are in school Or after they go to bed. Most creatives are night owls anyway, right?

So, where should you go?

– Coffee house

– Library

– Park

– Mall

– Around the block

3) LEAN INTO BOREDOM

Sounds counterproductive, right? But interestingly, studies have shown that being bored out of your mind can actually make you more creative. The reason for this may lie in the fact that when it is bored, your brain longs for stimulation. Not happy with the current boring state, it is seeking new possibilities, making new connections.

The problem is, nowadays we don’t let ourselves get bored. The second the possibility of boredom hits, we get our smartphones out and start scrolling. While this is not always a bad thing, as reading a good article or listening to an inspiring podcast can certainly boost your creativity, you should take the time to do nothing as well. Next time you are waiting in line at the post office, resist the urge to reach for that phone and just be. You might be surprised by just how interesting that boredom may turn out to be.

4) CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE

If your schedule allows, try working at different times of the day.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR MOST CREATIVE TIME OF DAY
One other way to boost your creativity is to time your creative pursuits so that they match your chronotype. Are you a morning-person or a night-owl? If you can, it really pays to take advantage of the time of day when you are at your most productive.

5) GET OFF YOUR PHONE

Have you ever noticed how whenever you’re waiting or bored, you automatically take out your phone? We’re probably all guilty of checking social media and/or playing games on our phones way too much. I know I am.Being on your phone is great to pass the time. It gives you the impression of being occupied. And most of all, it’s just so easy! But unfortunately, it’s not a good way to become more creative.

That can either make or break creativity. Spending time only looking at what others are doing isn’t going to help us boost our creative production. While there is a wide spectrum of things that promote creativity on the Internet, infinite amounts, we need to go back to the basics. Because we are born to create–it is one of the most natural things in this world–let’s go back to the beginning. Let’s escape technology for just a little bit and see how our creative juices flow.
